A numerical answer is not enough: validate its feed identity, units, timing and intended use.
Start with the question being answered
An oracle brings external or derived information into a contract-readable form. A price feed may answer an asset-to-currency question, but that answer is not necessarily an executable quote for your order. Identify the network, feed address, asset pair and denomination. A valid-looking number from an unrelated feed can be more dangerous than a missing value because it lets downstream calculations continue with false confidence.
Reconcile units before arithmetic
Imagine a hypothetical feed returns 250,000,000 with eight decimals. The human-readable value is 2.5, not 250 million. If the collateral balance uses six decimals, the balance and price require separate scaling before multiplication. Write a small hand-worked example alongside the automated calculation. The purpose is to catch unit mismatches at the boundary, before a visually plausible dashboard result conceals an error several orders of magnitude wide.
Freshness is application-specific
Chainlink feed integrations expose update information and require consumers to consider the characteristics of the selected feed. A timestamp should be checked against an explicit freshness policy appropriate to the application. There is no universal age threshold that suits every asset and use case. Ask what triggers feed updates, how the system behaves during interruptions and whether additional sequencer-status checks are relevant on the chosen layer-2 network.
Design an honest failure state
Suppose a reporting screen cannot establish that its input is current. It should show unavailable or stale rather than quietly carrying forward the last value as if newly measured. A trading or lending contract needs a deliberate failure policy whose economic consequences have been examined. Falling back to one thin pool can introduce a different manipulation surface. Test missing data, unexpected units and delayed updates, and document what the application does in each case rather than promising that an oracle removes uncertainty.
